About

Cat Stevens released his debut album, Matthew & Son, in 1967. It reached number 7 in the UK charts and established his early reputation as a teen idol. Sonically the album adheres to the prevailing 60s pop aesthetic with its diverse instrumentation and orchestral flourishes. Singles such as ‘‘Matthew & Son”, which reached number 2 in the UK, and “Here Comes My Baby”, a hit for The Tremeloes in 1967, gave hints of the songwriting legacy to come.
