Catch Bull at Four is the sixth album released by Yusuf / Cat Stevens. It was his most successful album in the United States, holding the top spot on Billboard’s chart for three consecutive weeks.
The album stands as a statement of his sincerity and dedication to the pursuit of spiritual fulfilment. Through the songs and artwork, he continued to openly share the personal journey with his audience. “Oh I’m on my way, I know I am” he reminds them in the opening track. “Sitting on my own, not by myself” he continues, an acknowledgment of the presence accompanying him on the sacred journey inwards.
Musically and lyrically the growth and progression is apparent when compared to earlier records. Having now travelled all over the world and deep within sacred texts, he draws from greatly enriched observations and pools of new experiences.
The title is taken from one of the Ten Bulls of Zen. Stating the stage he presently felt stationed at, Four: catching the bull.
The cover displays his illustration, photographed hanging from his living room wall. The listener now invited right into his home.
